How it all Started
The Cowtown Rodeo is a vision by local Calgarians to raise awareness and pay forward the benefits of educating repressed teenage girls. The funds raised from the previous two years have already helped educate over 180 girls at the Karuna Girls School in Lumbini, Nepal. These empowered young leaders provide a stronger, socially responsible voice in a much healthier community.
Each ticket sold will cover four months tuition for a teenage girl who otherwise would not get the opportunity. Last year, funds raised from beers drank, silent auction bids and sponsorship cash were enough to fund:
* annual budget $80,000. per year to fund teachers and school operations
* finish construction of 8 classrooms
* provide busing to more remote areas
* We need a second bus to reach more remote girls
* 8 unfinished classrooms still under construction to meet growing demand
Help make this become a reality:
Cowtown Rodeo 2017 raised over $30,000 for Karuna Girls College. Thank you to all attendees for your generous and thoughtful support!
About the Charity
The Karuna Girls College in Lumbini, Nepal, opened its doors in June 2013 with a modest enrollment of 30 students. Today, more than 200 girls attend the school, and in five years, Medical Mercy Canada hopes to enroll 500 girls each year.
The Karuna Girls College focuses exclusively on education beyond elementary school for teenage girls and vocational training for disadvantaged women.
In poor traditional families, girls are not expected to continue past elementary school. They are normally married off & forced to live with and take care of the husband’s family. Parents have to pay large dowries to get their daughters married and thus girls are seen as a burden on the family.
The lack of girls’ education contributes to several systemic problems:
• Lack of basic health
• Severe malnutrition
• Family hygiene
• Ignored medical care & high infant/mother mortality rates
Apart from offering English, Math, Science and other academic subjects, the school provides basic life skills such as nutrition, family planning, agriculture, and environmental awareness.
