How it all Started

The Cowtown Rodeo is a vision by local Calgarians to raise awareness and pay forward the benefits of educating repressed teenage girls.  The funds raised since the first year of the rodeo in 2015 have already helped educate over 80 graduates at the Karuna Girls School in Lumbini, Nepal. These empowered young leaders provide a stronger, socially responsible voice in a much healthier community.

The Impact

$300. will cover a full years tuition for a teenage girl who otherwise would not get the opportunity. Last year, funds raised from beers drank, silent auction bids and sponsorship cash help to fund:
  • enabling 320 repressed teenage girls to attend school
  • 8 more classrooms partially built to meet this demand
Cowtown Annual Rodeo 2020 Goal is $50,000 to facilitate:
* annual budget $80,000. per year to fund teachers and school operations
* finish construction of 8 new classrooms
* We need a second bus to reach girls further out in remote areas
* 8 unfinished classrooms still under construction to meet growing demand
Help make this become a reality:
Cowtown Rodeo 2019 raised over $35,000 for Karuna Girls College. Thank you to all attendees for your generous and thoughtful support!

About the Charity

"Often we ask: "What is goodness?" It is very pleasant that in our difficult time, there are people who are willing to come to the aid of others; kindly, unselfishly and from the heart. A good person is a happy person. And kindness certainly comes back to those who give it."

              --Headmistress, Karuna Girls College

The Karuna Girls College in Lumbini, Nepal, opened its doors in June 2013 with a modest enrollment of 25 students. Today, more than 320 girls attend the school.

The Karuna Girls College focuses exclusively on education beyond elementary school for teenage girls and vocational training for disadvantaged women.

In poor traditional families, girls are not expected to continue past elementary school. They are normally married off & forced to live with and take care of the husband’s family. Parents have to pay large dowries to get their daughters married and thus girls are seen as a burden on the family.

The lack of girls’ education contributes to several systemic problems:
• Female repression
* Greed and corruption
* Lack of basic health

• Severe malnutrition
• Family hygiene
• Over-population
• Ignored medical care & high infant/mother mortality rates

Apart from offering English, Math, Science and other academic subjects, the school provides basic life skills such as nutrition, family planning, agriculture, and environmental awareness.
